“The Lies We Told” by Sam Yu

Illustration by A&LJ Editor Katrina Luzadas

Do you remember what I said

About twenty-five moons ago?

I never missed a single one.

You were too polite to decline,

When the night and stars go to bed,

But one of them still dares to glow.

Do you still loathe me of our word,

The oath that I tricked you to say?

You broke it, but you blame me still,

Just like the glass upon that hill.

I lost five shades and half a bird

In the winter beside the bay.

So many lies I have been told;

So many lies I told myself.

The chill of deception one felt

Would ease away as the snows melt.

Summer sweeps clean the winter cold

Without the need of any help.

It is true I will love anew.

A tree forgets last summer’s leaves;

It might not, but it will embrace,

The blossoms past a winter haze.

The things that last are all too few,

The rest of which have to deceive.
