“Summer’s Passing” by Gwendolyn Bulko

Late summer dew always has a certain scent

It smells fresh and light with notes of grain and sweet delight

It feels strong and healthy,

full of promise and opportunites

Like you can smell both the life

and the onset of decay around you

The deer galloping in sync,

running to the trees as their young grow and their felt sheds

The ring of bugs as a comfort,

and the chill wisp of the air as a reminder

Fall is coming but it always does

August will always be back and the air will smell like growth again

Love, growth, new beginnings, endings;

All on the cusp at dusk this month

August is a time of change, always has been;

A time of new and old and moving on

I inhale and feel anew

I exhale and wait for the next wet heaviness of the dew

A soft gentle crisp reminder that summer is moving on,

and so I will with it

It lingers in my lungs,

helping replay the memories of each day before the sky winds down into winter
