“Massasauga” by Lilly Freeman

Lilly is a first year at the University of Michigan, looking to study elementary education. She loves going on nature walks, reading fantasy novels, singing off-key ballads to herself, and being overall full of whimsy and delight. When not playing euchre (the game to end all the games), she's designing fun characters.

Artist’s Statement: The piece, Massasauga, was a fun experiment in wardrobe design -- I specifically wanted a dress that draped off the character's shoulders and legs in a way that resembled a snake shedding its skin, as she walks into a new "her." Her hair is inspired by a cobra's neck and the background encircles her like a newborn curling in on itself. It was fun playing with the shapes here, I wouldn't have made this without the inspiration of this year's journal theme!
