“Side Quest Vol. 2” by Haylie Toth

Illustration by Arts and Literary Journal staff editor Edith Hanlon.

Through the night, the characters wander,

Up and down the sidewalks, their minds ponder

Where are we going? Why are we here?

What are those strange sounds that we hear?

Follow the music, follow the lights

It is destined to bring us some wonderful sights

As the night falls, the quest ends,

The characters trudge home to help clean up their friends

Things may have been lost, irreplaceable it seems,

But the room still fills with laughter, bursting at the seams.

Haylie Toth is a freshman at the University of Michigan, where she is a student of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. She is a member of the Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts Michigan Learning Community, and she is very passionate about writing! What inspired her to create this piece were the relationships that continue to develop throughout each month that we are here, living with our friends in the dorms of U of M. At this point in time we still may be navigating the confusing and stressful journey of college life, but at the end of the day when the going gets tough, we are all still there for each other, and we can laugh as if we have known each other for years.
