“Dollhouse” by Kennedy McCarthy

Blue is my favorite color,

I established that years ago.

And sure, people change.

But that’s how I’ve always been.

In my dollhouse,

I wear bright baby blue,

I’m the girl I’ve come to know,

Who lives without expiration.

My path, drawn from a child’s sketchbook.

Pages torn and glued together.

I hold to it like the Bible,

But I was never the religious type.

At the cusp of growth,

My skin is stale, resistant to change,

It’s clear to me,

I was never built to age.

I’m independent.

But scared to be alone.

I know what I want.

But it changes by the minute.

In my dollhouse,

I wear thin porcelain skin,

I’m the girl who couldn’t change.

It’s how I’ve always been.
